What Does $10aDay Mean for You?

What Does the $10aDay Mean for You?

In 2010 the Coalition of Child Care Advocates of BC partnered with the Early Childhood Educators of BC (ECEBC) on a new approach to child care. Rather than just highlighting the child care chaos in BC, we decided to put forward a realistic solution and to campaign for a system of quality, affordable, licensed spaces in every BC community to meet the needs of all families who choose child care, including for parents who work non-standard hours and those with children with different abilities.

Supporters of the $10aDay Plan now represent more than 2 million British Columbians including 48 local governments, 31 school boards, academics, community and non-profit organizations, labour unions, anti-poverty groups, chambers of commerce, businesses, early childhood educators, parents and grandparents.

On February 20th the provincial budget will be announced and we’re recommending that government start to implement the $10aDay Plan with these first steps:

  • Reducing child care fees in all licensed infant and toddler programs by $500/month
  • Increasing wages of Early Childhood Educators in licensed programs by $1/hour
  • Eliminating child care fees in licensed programs for families with incomes less than $40,000/year
  • Creating 22,500 new licensed child care spaces over the next 3 years
  • Supporting the development and implementation of an Indigenous-led plan for Indigenous child care
